The other day I was talking to a friend that I haven’t seen in ages and she remarked “I don’t know when the last time my boys and I have had our picture taken.” So being a good friend that I am, I offered to photograph her and the boys.
“Ohhhh, no. I’m way too out of shape for pictures. Maybe in summer after I get all of this weight off.”
The entire way home I kept thinking of what she had said. And it’s not the first time I’ve heard that excuse. Or one like it.
“We’re just way too busy for family photos.”
“I haven’t had time to get to the hairstylist and I am NOT getting my photos done with all of these greys.”
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I have to lose 5kg first.” And on and on they go….
Where did we get the ludicrous idea that we had to meet certain requirements to be in a family portrait?
We only get one shot at this life thing – and your children are not going to care about your size, or your grey hairs, or whatever other excuses you’re coming up with. They’re going to look for a photo of you to show their kids or grand kids someday and guess what – you’re not going to be there! Parents of my generation only had photos taken at special occasions when all the children were dressed in their Sunday best. And their only option was to print them, on fancy scalloped edge paper. And we treasure those photos now as it gives us a glimpse into the life of our parents before we knew them. Yes, we may laugh at the haircuts and their fashion choices but we treasure those photos.
As your children will treasure any photo of you that you give them. Don’t let your insecurities and your doubts rob your family the pleasure of knowing you – even through something as small as a photograph they’ll hold someday, long after you’re gone.
One day your children will go to look for photographs of you…
What will they have?
